The Passing of the Elves

Snow White! Snow White! O Lady clear!
O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O Light to us that wander there
Amid the world of woven trees!
Gilthoniel! O Elbereth!
Clear are thy eyes and bright is breath,
Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee
In a far land beyond the Sea!
O Stars that in the Sunless Year
With shining hand by thee were sown,
In windy fields now bright and clear
We see your silver blossom blown!
O Elbereth Gilthoniel!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS IS LITERALLY THE SOUND OF COOL
Press play and you will find yourself wearing a long black coat on a windy city street holding a firearm that won’t be invented for another 50 years, your voice will be a full octave deeprer AND YOUR HAIR WILL LOOK PERFECT.

Why I think I See Fire is a really good indicator of how The Desolation of Smaug will be a lot more emotionally heavy than An Unexpected Journey.
I’ve said before that one of my biggest issues with AUJ was that nothing felt like it had emotionally weight throughout the course of the film. The stakes never seemed high and in return, I found myself not altogether worrying about the bulk of the characters and their outcomes. However, I See Fire is, I think, gut wrenching. It adds a very tangible level of fear to Thorin’s perspective, along with his pride and confidence, that I think makes him a much more interesting figure not only to watch on screen, but to genuinely care about as a character. The song emphasizes failure, and thusly death, a very real outcome that I never once considered while watching AUJ. It just seemed to me, as the viewer, that everything would just turn out alright.
Basically, if The Desolation of Smaug has any of emotional weight that I See Fire does, it’s going to be a far heavier, far more emotionally moving film than it’s predecessor. And I, for one, am excited.

Once Upon A December. Anastasia in Russian. This would be the language that she would have sung in.
Russian is such a musical language.
This is ridiculously beautiful sounding.
Funny, I was just talking about this….
//This is what Natasha sounds like when she sings and no one can convince me otherwise.
This is a flat-out jawdropping, hair-raising, goosebumps-inducing piece of music (and from a spectacular film too.) Listen to the whole thing - it builds and builds and builds.
